Here are the details of the first four pipes I made in 2006. 2006 was the inaugural year for my new operation. For that reason, these pipes (MHP0601 - MHP0604) are quite important. Not only are they representative of my new engineering process, but - like the first footfalls down an Autumn path - they mark the first forays into a legend. See them well: these are the first bits of lore in what will someday be the chronicle of Montgomery Handmade Pipes.
MHP0601
This was the first pipe created at my new shop - a straight billiard. As mentioned above, its creation was also the first run of my new engineering process. The results - in my estimation - are quite satisfactory. This pipe is now the property of my father.
MHP0602
For this second pipe, I decided to create an apple shape. In this I was successful, though the bowl itself turned out a bit larger than I had originally imagined. Still, the result is quite pleasing. This pipe is the property of Philip Glaze of Muncie, Indiana.
"I just finished a bowl of B.H.'s Evening Stroll in my new MHP2006. It was a very smooth smoke. The draw on the pipe was very even. Not too easy but not hard. It took about 40 minutes to finish the first bowl. The bowl never got hot. Just a nice warm feel. It has a very nice fit in my hand and is very comfortable smoking pipe." - Philip Glaze
MHP0603
The third pipe from my new shop is a slightly-bent dublin. The curve of the stem is just a tad tricky in the mouth until one (literally) gets the hang of it. A significant difference between this pipe and its older siblings is that it is much smaller than they. Because I did not own a small pipe at the time of its creation, this pipe is part of my own collection.
MHP0604
For the fourth pipe, I wanted to create something with a rounded bowl and a saddle stem. This pumpkin-looking sitter is the result. I call it "the leaving pipe", because I gave it as a gift to Rev. James Cassidy. Jim is my former pastor. He left the civilized, Western world to pastor a church in Ringoes, New Jersey.
"The MHP0604 is a hand made pipe of the finest quality. The bowl is well done with a smooth finish. The bottom of the bowl is slightly flattened so the smoker may place the bowl on a surface without it falling over. In fact, this model has "weeble-wabble" action; meaning, even if you tried to place the bowl on its side, it buoys back to the upright position! A feature I've seen in no other pipe - making it perfect for the clumsy smoker who tends to knock his pipe over after he has placed it on a flat surface! The bowl is made of thick briar, making it no hotter than warm to the touch - even after an hour and a half of smoking. Which means, simply, the pipe smokes cool. The pipe is compact, making it perfect for the smoker on the go. If you want a compact pipe without sacrificing bowl size, this is the one to get!" - Jim Cassidy
