2006 - SERIES B (CHRISTMAS)

The following three pipes were made together as a set, which was specially ordered as a Christmas gift for three brothers. As I worked on the three in parallel, I began to see each one as specially "fitted" for a particular one of the brothers. Just as each brother is unique, so is each of these three pipes different from its companions. Somehow, the distinguishing marks of each pipe seemed to suggest to me the one to whom it best belonged. It was quite an experience - as though I were reading the soul of the briar itself.

This pipe - the grinning bear - is the largest of the three. It is also the only bent in the group. Distinguishing marks are a convex curvature of the rim, a deep tobacco chamber, and thick walls. Its owner should likewise be outgoing, with a deep well from which to draw out mirth & strength. Who owns it must also possess thick skin - capable of bearing the stings of both careless friends and malicious foes.

This pipe - the philosopher's billiard - has a shorter bowl and a longer draw. Its bearer must accordingly possess keen patience, subtlety of thought, and a deliberate manner of life appropriate to the cool smoking experience which it affords. Who owns it will see furthest through the shimmering grey rings & scent more than mere aroma in the air.

This pipe - the puzzler's pot - is defined by the precision of its lines. Its character lies at the juncture of round & flat, on the fused edges of varied experience. Who owns it experiences much of life, and yet is able to fit each piece - thread each stitch of the tapestry - into an integrated whole.
